Crisis Intervention Team (CIT)

Crisis response system that includes all the services and resources available to help a person experiencing a mental health crisis and connect the person to treatment, services, or support to address their long-term needs.

What is CIT?

Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Administration

The purpose of this course is to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to:

  • Recognize an opioid overdose 
  • Give care for a person experiencing an opioid overdose

Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED

The purpose of the American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. 


The courses in this program: 

  • Teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and decide whether advanced medical care is needed. 
  • Focus on life-threatening emergencies and how to respond to them. So, when minutes matter, participants will be prepared to take the critical first steps in giving care until help arrives. 
  • Offer a choice of first aid, CPR and AED courses to meet the various training needs of a diverse audience. 
  • The intended audience for the courses in this program includes lay responders in the workplace and community. 


The participants could represent a broad range of backgrounds and motivation and may: 

  • Differ in age, level of maturity, level of education or experience 
  • Be taking this course to fulfill employment requirements 
  • Be taking these courses to provide for the safety and well-being of their friends, family and community or for personal satisfaction 


After completing the First Aid/CPR/AED course, participants will be able to: 

  • Describe how to recognize an emergency and gain confidence to act, using the emergency action steps: CHECK—CALL—CARE. 
  • Demonstrate high-quality CPR and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) for a person who is in cardiac arrest. 
  • Demonstrate first aid care for a person who is choking. 
  • Describe how to recognize and give appropriate first aid care for sudden illnesses. 
  • Describe methods used to control life-threatening bleeding, including demonstrating the application of direct pressure. 
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of and describe appropriate first aid care for injuries and environmental emergencies. 

Basic Life Support (BLS)

The American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor-Led Training course provides participants with the knowledge and skills they need to assess, recognize and care for patients who are experiencing respiratory arrest or respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, airway obstruction, opioid overdose or other life-threatening injury or illness. When a patient experiences a life-threatening emergency, healthcare providers need to act swiftly and promptly. The course emphasizes providing high-quality care and integrating psychomotor skills with critical thinking and problem solving to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. 


The intended audience for this course includes: 

  • Medical personnel, such as physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, nurse assistants, dentists, physical therapists, pharmacists and students entering the field. 
  • Public safety personnel and other professional responders, such as paramedics, advanced emergency medical technicians (AEMTs), emergency medical technicians (EMTs), firefighters, law enforcement, emergency medical responders (EMRs) and students entering the field. 


After completing the Basic Life Support course, participants will be able to: 

  • Apply concepts of effective teamwork when caring for a patient experiencing a life-threatening emergency. 
  • Integrate communication, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills during a high-performance BLS team response. 
  • Apply a systematic, continuous approach to assess, recognize and care for adults, children and infants experiencing a life-threatening emergency. 
  • Perform a rapid assessment for responsive and unresponsive adults, children and infants. 
  • Effectively care for adults, children and infants experiencing a life-threatening injury or illness. Effectively care for adults, children and infants in respiratory arrest or respiratory failure. 
  • State the principles of high-quality CPR for adults, children and infants. 
  • Identify BLS differences among adults, children and infants. 
  • Provide high-quality chest compressions for adults, children and infants. 
  • Deliver effective ventilations to adults, children and infants using a pocket mask and bag-valve-mask (BVM) resuscitator. 
  • Demonstrate effective use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) for adults, children and infants. 
  • Provide high-quality BLS care for adults, children and infants in single- and multiple-provider situations. 
  • Deliver effective back blows, abdominal thrusts and chest thrusts for adults, children and infants with airway obstruction. 
  • State the principles of caring for a pregnant patient in cardiac arrest. State the principles of care for a patient experiencing an opioid overdose. 


The program offers the flexibility of two delivery options to best fit instructors’ and participants’ schedules and preferences: 

  • Instructor-Led Training: In-person, instructor-led training 
  • Blended Learning: Combines an online session with an in-person skills session 
  • The course objectives and certification requirements for the delivery options are identical. 

Bloodborne Pathogens

Designed for those who are at risk for on the job exposure to blood and other bodily fluids in the workplace. The course teaches staff how bloodborne pathogens are spread, how to avoid exposure and what to do if exposed to infectious material. This course is one of the requirements of the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard.
